About Sandy Maya
Artist - Dancer - Photographer - Model - Choreographer - Teacher and Youtuber
Inspired by nature and my love for life makes me want to create and express myself in any way I can.
Starting off posing in front of the lens as a Model back in 1999 opened the door to photography in 2004. I use it to express myself artistically as well as creating stock photography.
I have always danced. As a child and teenager I did folkloric dance as well as ballet and jazzdance. My passion for dance took over when I seemed to have found the dance style I did not know I was looking for. I started taking bellydance lessons with the SMBA in 2011. I began spending more time choreographing and performing and began to appreciate the traditional oriental dance music.
As the bellydancing filled most of my leisure time, I took on a teacher apprenticeship with the SMBA in January 2015 and I began teaching bellydance under the RBSB in September 2015 shortly after creating my Bellydance youtube channel. I am currently coaching beginner and improver students at the SMBA as well as teaching my own classes at Sandy Maya's Dance.
As I became a full time Bellydance teacher in Berkshire, I decided I wanted to get back into other dance styles I learned as a teenager and realised how hard it is to come by Adult Dance Classes as most dance schools are designed for kids. I started looking for classes and realised that there was just not enough out there for anyone who wanted to continue dance in their adulthood. I also noticed that there are hardly any classes out there during lunchtime which would accomodate the self employed and shift workers or mums. I decided to give it a go and teach Bellydance during lunchtimes and it worked a treat. I recently added modern Show-dance to the timetable while I am also looking to further my own education in dance by finding adult classes in my area.
In 2013 I started discovering my love to paint. Topics I choose to paint are very often inspired by my own photography and my love for dance and the fact that I grew up by the sea.
- In 2019 I started a podcast. My first series is called: After-class thoughts of a dance teacher. Listen here
Because of my many interests I figured that I should simply be a Freelance Artist in every way I feel the need to express myself.
That's what makes me happy :)
